Here's the low-down on how chocolate can be good for your health… (Sweet Justification!)

Raw Cacao Benefits

Raw Cacao (not to be confused with “cocoa”) is known primarily for it's cardiac benefits. Regular consumption of raw cacao powder has been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease & reduce systemic inflammation (including inflammation which can lead to high blood pressure). (source)

The Flavanols found in chocolate are thought to help reduce blood pressure by forming nitric acid in the body which is thought to cause blood vessel walls to relax and open wider. (source)

Cacao is also a good source of many other helpful minerals for maintaining heart health including magnesium, potassium, calcium, copper and manganese.

So, why has chocolate gotten such a bad wrap?

So, here's the deal… all chocolate is not created equal. I imagine you already know this… but really it all boils down to this. “Cacao” is not the same thing as “cocoa” and Hershey's is not even… well…

I could not possibly do better than this article from Mamavation that addresses the unhealthy chocolate brands, and what they put in that junk (like high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors and flavors, TBHQ, & carageenan, just to name a few! Eww.) Be sure to check out the Really handy “eat this, not that” reference pic at the end too. Trust me, (even though you probably Don't want to) you Definitely DO want to check it out… and then, come back here to figure out which one of these 110 healthy chocolate cake recipes you're going to make first! 😉
